THE MARY PRINCE NARRATIVES PART II
Paint, Vinyl + Sound
Dimension variable
The Mary Prince Narratives Part ll (2024) is a sound and site-specific wall and floor text installation situated on the first-floor gallery at Mimosa House for transfeminisms Chapter III: Fragile Archives group exhibition. The text is based on excerpts from The History of Mary Prince, A West Indian Slave. Related by Herself (1831) -- the first known Black woman to relate a narrative about the experience of being enslaved published in England.
The installation forms work no. 43 in The Blackness Series -- an ongoing series of numbered text works commencing in 2016. For this exhibition, Prince's narrative unfolds from the black walls onto the floor and across into the next gallery space, where it engages in a dialogue with Irene Antonia Diane Reece's photographic images dealing with Black life in America before guiding the viewer back to main space where the rows of text add to the intensity of Prince's haunting experience.
